This is Adult ADHD: Episode 3
ADHD is often associated with creativity, quick thinking, and boundless energy, traits that many admire and even consider superpowers. But for individuals with untreated ADHD, the reality can look very different. Untreated symptoms can lead to challenges that impact daily life and well-being. Yet, ADHD is one of the most treatable neurodevelopmental conditions. So, let’s dig into ADHD with psychiatrist Dr. Diane McIntosh. She answers those lingering questions like: Is ADHD overdiagnosed? Are the medications safe and truly necessary?
Joining the conversation is Robert, a young professional who not only lives with ADHD but thrives with it. And, as always, PSYCHEDUP’s resident psychologist, Dr. Randy Mackoff, talks about treatment options with Dr. McIntosh.

More About Adult ADHD

ADHD is diagnosed when symptoms are persistent, consistent, and significantly impair social, academic, or work functioning.
ADHD symptoms fall into three main categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, and they can profoundly affect daily life for both children and adults.
Inattention may involve difficulty focusing, organizing, or remembering details. This often looks like frequently losing items, being easily distracted, or struggling to complete tasks requiring sustained effort.
Hyperactivity includes constant movement, fidgeting, or an inability to stay seated. In adults, it may present as feelings of restlessness rather than overt activity.
Impulsivity manifests as interrupting conversations, acting without thinking, or difficulty waiting for a turn.
ADHD is diagnosed when symptoms are persistent, consistent, and significantly impair social, academic, or work functioning. With the right diagnosis and treatment, symptoms can be managed, leading to improved quality of life at any age.
Psychostimulants are often the first choice, with long-acting versions offering all-day symptom control. For those who cannot tolerate stimulants, non-stimulants may be used, though they are less effective for most. Finding the right medication and dose often requires trial and error with a healthcare provider.
Talk therapy can help individuals and families understand ADHD and develop strategies for managing symptoms, while self-help strategies like maintaining routines and prioritizing sleep and exercise can also provide relief.
ADHD is a common psychiatric disorder, affecting 1:20 Canadians, yet several misconceptions exist:
- ADHD is overdiagnosed. Research shows it is underdiagnosed and often under-treated.
- ADHD is a social disorder, affecting only unruly children or adults seeking an excuse for their behavior. In reality, ADHD is highly heritable, with strong genetic evidence behind it.
- ADHD meds are dangerous and addictive. Properly prescribed and taken, long-acting psychostimulants have been life-changing for many.
